Where a floorboard has become too damaged to repair, you may want to replace it – or at least the damaged section. If you are removing the whole floorboard, you should be able to lift it up by inserting a bolster chisel and levering the floorboard, using a small block of wood as a fulcrum. A floorboard will lift more easily by springing the centre of the board, rather than starting at the end. If the floorboards are tongue and groove, you will have to cut through the tongues on both sides first – with either a floorboard saw or a powered circular saw, set so that the blade just passes through the tongue but does not hit the joists below.

To remove a section, lever up a whole length, so that you can make a cut across the floorboard directly above the middle of a joist, using a floorboard saw.

When you have the old floorboard up, check the width and thickness of the replacement board you need to buy. Hopefully, this will be a standard size: if the available board is too wide, you will have to plane it down; if it is too thick, you can reduce the size of the joists with a chisel or a rasp, so that the board fits; if it is (slightly) too thin, place strips of hardboard or plywood on top of the joists to bring the floorboard level with its neighbours. Cut the new board to the exact length.

Once the board fits exactly, drill two pilot holes to take the nails at each joist position. If the joists have a pipe or cable run across or through them, make sure any nails are well clear of these. Hammer the nails home.

Stripping Floorboards
Paint and varnish can be removed from floorboards using paint stripper or a heat gun. Remove old polish with white spirit and steel wool. If you intend to have the floorboards looking completely natural (with just a coat of varnish to seal them), you may have to hire a floor sander to clean them first. This is by no means an easy tool to use, so make sure you get proper instruction from the hire shop. Make sure all protruding nails are hammered down before you start. Work through the abrasive papers, sanding at an angle to the floorboards when using coarse abrasive, and in line with the boards with medium and fine. Hire an edge sander for the areas next to the skirting boards.

More homes today are being renovated to stand out from others on the street. People wish to increase their market value, especially in times such as these, and they will often turn to the latest seasonal colors that do not irritate any neighbors. Of course, when doing this, they are also looking to stamp their own designs and creations onto a valuable plot of land that will inevitably be theirs for many years to come. One such way of doing this is to bring a small taste of the European culture across onto your exterior walls with bright French country colors.

The white backdrop plays an important part in the French country home. The clean and crisp setting is intended to create the charm and style of the Western European country and give you a stepping stone to adding the accents that really allow the house to shine. The perfect home is inviting and welcoming, and it would appear that many people wish for this to be coupled with something exciting and new too. This can all be utilized with a few colors and some light greenery to add that finishing touch to a place you will see yourself living in years to come.

Decorating your house is extremely easy, although possibly very time consuming, and in some cases costly. Many French homes have exterior shutters, which can be purchased from any home building store. They can be found in many different colors and styles, but a nice blue one is often a must for a French country home. If you don’t have pre-made shutters, then you could create some yourself by using clear planks of wood that have been stained and then attached to hinges.

The shutter project is an aside while you are waiting for your white wall paint to dry. Should you be lucky enough to already have your house white, then you may wish to take the time to ensure that the paint is touched up and free from blemishes. You could also consider attaching siding to your home, especially Stucco, to give the house a very European feel. Two coats are needed in this exercise, and it can take at least four days to allow for both coats to dry fully. Once this is done, it will be very unlikely that a repaint is needed for at least a year.

Finally, you can return the shutters, and decorate your home with lovely accents such as flower boxes, potted plants and small hedges, especially topiaries. These are very common in France, and your home will look divine, especially if evergreens and ivy trellises are used in addition to the wild flowers and other brightly colored plants up the sidewalk. Benches are very fashionable in the garden area, and teamed up with cushions make your home extremely inviting. For that French feel, it is clear that the bright colors work exceptionally well, and you will be able to live in the lap of luxury in no time.

Time outside is very valuable. In the world today your lives are often hectic enough that even a five minute break is a wondrous experience. When you finally get the time to relax outside with your friends, especially on a warm and sunny day, you may find that the time you would normally have spent replacing your old garden furniture has been lost amidst mountains of paperwork and office communication. As such, your equipment has seen better days. It has been unable to withstand the sun, snow and other extremes and has broken down. With a simple repair project you will find that your furniture can be restored to the glory and comfort level of your old outdoor table.

This project is extremely cost effective, and incredibly easy. There are also very few materials you will need as those that must be purchased will not be used fully after this project, and can thus save you money for any further projects you need to undertake. Of course, there are ways that even these items can save you money. If you shop around, then you might find some good deals where the prices are reduced in some hardware stores.

To clean the furniture completely, then you may need to use a strong cleaning agent. A dish brush or a nail brush will be the easiest item to use to be rid of every speck of dirt or grime that has collected on your garden furniture. Then you will be able to rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and left to dry. This can be done in any area that is protected from the elements such as a garage. The natural grain should shine through before you are able to proceed with the project.

Furniture can not be restored unless it is clean and smooth, and as such, sanding it using a medium to hard grit paper should start the restoration. Depending on the size of the table, you might have to utilize an electric sander to remove some of the paint and even out any dents or nicks that might have occurred over time. After this, paint stripper should be used to finish the project and remove any of the other small items that are left. Again, there may be a lengthy wait before the furniture item is dry enough to be primed. Alternatively, you might need to give the wood another sanding to ensure that the grain shows through before the paint primer can be used.

Finally you are ready to choose your paint color. You might wish to paint the furniture in the same color as the old table, but at the same time you might wish to give the furniture a new lease of life with a brand new tone. Different types of paint will inevitably produce a new finish, and a final coat of clear varnish should give you a little more protection from the elements. Choosing to cover up your garden equipment should prolong the life further.

A well-maintained staircase not only looks better but it is safer to use. Most repairs are fairly straightforward but improvements may prove trickier. The most likely fault with stairs is that they creak as you walk on them. This is caused by loose parts and is most easily cured by working from underneath the stair (assuming you have access to it via an understairs cupboard) to re-secure the triangular wooden blocks between tread and riser.

Repairing Balustrades
It is sometimes possible to prise apart a vertically split baluster, or spindle, and squeeze in some wood adhesive. The split can then be taped or held with a G-clamp, until the adhesive has dried. Where the split is horizontal, remove the baluster and drill small holes in the two halves. Cover one end of a narrow dowel with adhesive and insert it into the lower half of the baluster. Spread adhesive on to the top of the dowel, insert it into the hole in the upper part of the baluster, then push the two halves together and leave until the adhesive has dried. To replace the baluster in position, nail through the base at an angle to secure the baluster to the tread. Read how to repair stair balustrade.

Fitting Stair Rods
Stair rods are coming back into fashion. They are used only with stair ‘runners’ – a length of carpet running up the stairs with a space either side; they are not used with fitted carpet covering the whole stair.

Stair rods are available in brass, crystal and wood. You can order them to the correct size for your carpet. It should be emphasised that the stair rods should not be relied on to hold the carpet on their own; it should also be held by grippers in each junction between tread and riser.

Each stair rod is held in place by two brackets, one on either side of the stair runner on each tread -normally, including the floor at the bottom. Each bracket comes in two halves: you screw the bottom of the bracket to the stair after making bradawl holes, lay the stair rod in the brackets and then fit the top half.

You’re browsing through your email and notice an interesting message. The subject line mentions that it’s important, so you click the link to read the email. It simply states that there are attachments to download, so you go ahead and see what’s included. Now your computer is infected with a virus, and you’re kicking yourself for trusting a stranger. If you want to protect yourself from hackers and scammers, you need to follow certain steps – steps you can take to keep from becoming a victim.

Avoid Unknown Sites
If you do a lot of research on the Internet, you need to be aware of the sites that you’re visiting. Unfortunately, many websites contain malware or viruses that could harm your computer. If you’re unsure about whether the site is safe or not, you should consider using a piece of software like McAfee SiteAdvisor, which can conduct a scan to check for things like spyware. When a site comes up with a message about allowing popups, be sure to ignore it or say, “No!” If you take a chance and choose “yes,” be prepared to get hit with hundreds of spammy popups and have your computer lock up!

HTTPS in the URL
Because so many people now use the Internet for activities like banking, it’s important that your transactions are secure. That’s why any sort of banking site, payment processor, etc. that asks for personal information should have “https” in the URL. This means that the connection is secure and not open to outside interference. If you don’t see “https” in the URL, then don’t submit any sensitive information.

Use Strong Passwords
It’s very important that you have a somewhat long, complex password to protect yourself from hackers because a short password can be more easily decrypted than a longer password. The more characters that are contained in the password, the more combinations there are that need to be “cracked” by the hacker. Try to make your passwords nine characters or longer to best protect yourself.

Antivirus Software
This is one of the most common methods used by people to protect themselves and their computer, but it’s still important to know what the benefits really include. Besides protecting your own computer, and any computer in your network, the software can also scan your email to check for viruses and threats. By spending the few extra dollars for antivirus (and updating whenever you see a new security download), you’ll save yourself the hassle and cost of professional repairs— not to mention downtime inconvenience and potential theft of your data and identity!

Using a Firewall
A firewall provides protection against someone else trying to get access to your computers, or your Internet account so they don’t have to pay for one. You may even use a firewall to block access to various sites on your PC. In a business setting, it allows you to block employees from visiting entertainments sites. At home, a firewall can help you keep your child from viewing an inappropriate site.

Updating Your Operating System
Although you might be tempted to wait to update your operating system, you may be putting yourself at risk of an attack. Updates are critical to the performance and safety of your computer, and they help to fix parts of the operating system that are susceptible to hackers, so be sure to download them as soon as they become available.

Caution with Email Attachments
As described in the opening paragraph, email attachments can infect your machine with viruses and cause you a lot of headaches. The number one thing to remember is to never download attachments from anybody that you don’t know. It’s also a good rule of thumb to never click on links in any email (always retype or copy and paste them into a new browser tab) or you could quickly become a victim of identity theft!

Beware of Public Computers
If you must use a public computer, do so at your own risk. Not only can the person sitting next to you see your personal information, but the next person to use that computer may have access to your usernames and passwords. Make sure to always delete your browsing history, including passwords, after you’re finished.

Basically, remember to treat your passwords and other login information just as you would a credit card in your wallet; the loss or theft of both can get you into hot water very quickly. It is tempting to have short passwords and use the same throughout your accounts, but just imagine losing 1 credit card that had access to every bank account and store account that you currently use. Now you’re picturing what the “tip of the iceberg” would look like to you experience identity theft!

Benjamin Petersen is a writer for technology sites and a content contributor for proxy software sites, especially innovators in the proxy field, because he feels Internet security is a prime concern in today’s business world.

Aesthetic Appeal: Socks can bare a persons personality and their spunk. Depending on how you wear them, their length, and their color. Socks tell a lot about a person whether they know it or not. You could be the Pippi long-stockings of the era and it would literally be a huge and bold statement to society about how you, as a person, think and behave.

Disease Prevention: Athletes Foot, Callus, and other Fungus; these are just a few diseases that can easily be prevented by wearing socks. That’s it, taking the 5 seconds of your time to slip on those fuzzy foot huggers is all it takes. If you regularly spite the idea of wearing socks and think you are some kind of rebel; think again, you literally are inviting diseases and pain to your body.

Heats the Whole Body: That’s right, I said it. The entire body is heated by you just wearing socks. How? Think of this: The feet, hands and ears are the primary outlets of heat for your body. Once your hands or your feet are cold, the core of your body (the abdominal and groin regions) drops in temperature to compensate for the drop in the limbs. If you can heat your feet you are on the right track to heating your core and the rest of your body as well.

Stench: Without wearing socks, which absorb a majority of the perspiration that precipitates from your feet’s skin; the sweat will have to go somewhere else. Often it will be left to soak up in the shoe and on your skin. This will lead to a foul odor that often can be easily traced back to the origin and will leave you embarrassed and, in quite the social-predicament depending on your whereabouts.

Chafed and Cracked Skin: Without socks your skin will become dry, cracked, and chafed. Constantly rubbing up against your footwear has a high toll to pay on your feet and their skin. This price is easily avoidable though, since socks can not only prevent the chaffing; but also aid in softening up some of the dry and cracked skin naturally.

Alleviate Pain: No one likes walking around barefoot. With the help of socks you can alleviate a ton; if not all, pain from walking around barefoot. Ever walk on gravel? Perhaps you have children and their toys sharp or plastic toys and Legos lying around your house? We all know the many dangers lurking on our floors waiting for us to step on them and potentially puncture our skin.

By taking the time and effort to read this article and examine these six simple reasons; you have equipped yourself to advance the knowledge of you and others in the art fine art of sock-wearing. Remember that socks are a vital and enormously essential component to daily life. Without them you will lose many benefits and make yourself vulnerable to illness and other ailments. Just slip on your foot-friends and you’ll never regret reaping the benefits!

Timothy Frisch, a student at the University of Wisconsin – Stout, has been wearing socks ever since day one. He loves to keep his feet warm and believes that others should be as ardent as he is. He also contributes regularly to PSCLife.com – the health-nut’s spot for Accuflora for an improved digestive system and Cosamin ASU to improve joint funtion.

There are plenty of benefits to go along with it. Better salaries, discounts, life long friends, and of course wisdom. For those of us blessed with good health thus far, it is important to take proper steps when minting ourselves physically and mentally. The thought of the doctor’s office can make some or us cringe at times. However taking precautionary steps can really pay off in the future, and you’ll be glad you took them.

Test 1. Colonoscopy. Well, it’s going to be hard to talk people into having this test done. Only about 30-35 percent of men are screen for colon cancer. This number is far too low. Starting at age 50, individuals should be screened regularly for colon cancer. I can assure that it won’t be the most pleasant thing, but it does save lives, and that’s what counts most.

Test 2. Skin Exam. At this age we have more to worry about than acne. After years of sun exposure it is important to have your skin examined head to toe. This can help prevent serious complications and detect early signs of skin cancer. Having your skin graphed may also influence you to use sunscreen more diligently, as you see damage that may have been sauced by the sun.

Test 3. Blood Sugar. Bad eating habits, lack of exercise, excessive weight, or even genetics can influence your blood sugar in a bad way. All of these things can lead to diabetes. When your mid 40′s come around be sure to get a fasting blood sugar test, and then again once every three years.

Test 4. Blood Pressure. This is the easy one. You are even able to skip your doctor’s visit if you purchase a blood pressure machine that is for the home. Very easy to check, doesn’t take a lot of time, and can tell you a lot about your health. Great for showing the warning signs of possible heart attack/ stroke.

Test 5. Breast Exam. Although this test is usually reserved for women, it doesn’t always exclude men. Women should start getting breast exam’s in their 20′s every three years and starting at 40 once a year. Men can usually tell if there is something wrong, and a quick check by a doctor during another visit will suffice. once a year for women is not that hard, get to your doctors and find peace of mind.

There you have it. The 5 tests you might want to have done. Being anxious of a little concerned is quite alright before testing. As long as you take regular precautionary steps, you should be fine. Don’t let the inconvenience of the doctors office inconvenience you in the future.

The planet can only improve upon how much a person is willing to give, and there are many ways that the average person can do their bit for society. Regularly donating unused items to charity shops, or making use of the local Freecycle network is a way of keeping things out of landfill or clogging up the sidewalks and roads with overflowing trashcans. Other ideas can stem from utilizing your own garbage to create stunning pieces of art. One such way is to recycle paper rolls with radiant designs and fun projects that the whole family can enjoy.

If you are able to impart the knowledge of living a good and sustainable life upon your children, you are securing the future generations and the earth to a lifetime of abundance. Of course, it isn’t always as rosy, but at least the information will be there at their disposal. Recycling is a large part of this, and the enjoyable projects that can be created with the whole family are in great quantities if you are able to use your imagination, or indeed allow the children to use theirs, and create some stunning patterns on the card.

Designs such as candles can be created from the cylindrical shape, and they can be used and reused for many family holiday events like Christmas and Easter. They can even be handed out as decorative gifts for friends and family alike. These imitation candles can be made easily without using too many materials, although it is necessary to cover all the surfaces with newspaper or dust sheet to prevent any spillages, especially where young children are concerned. This could get quite messy, but children and adults alike will enjoy the creation process as much as the finished article.

Paint a thin coat of your chosen color onto the toilet or kitchen roll tube. While it is still drying, craft glue should be squirted down the top so that the melting wax is simulated as the paint and glue dries out. If you have other projects to be doing, then it might be a good time to commence these, as the waiting time is at least 8 hours depending on the size of the tube. Acrylic paints are highly recommended for this project, as they are thick enough to work with the glue and seep into the cardboard to give an even coating, although a second coat might be needed in some areas.

A flame shape can be created using gold wrapping paper and attached to the top of the candle using craft glue, and then the finished project can be set on a paper plate, or coupled with other colored candles to create a display of lovely glittery candles.

You do not have to solely create candles. There are many projects that can be formed, and you only need to look around the natural world for inspiration and creativity for that wondrous idea.

Scared of Statins and other cholesterol lowering drugs? You should be. What man tinkers with, often becomes Frankenstein.

First off, I am not a doctor. I don’t need to be to lower cholesterol, and you don’t either. You can lower your cholesterol with timed release Niacin, a water soluable B vitamin. The question is, do you really need to lower it to protect your heart?

I have always found it hard to believe that my body is manufacturing some substance to take me out, making more cholesterol than it needs, choking my arteries until my heart fails. Our bodies generally repair and heal themselves, not manufacture lethal substances. Clearly our war on cholesterol is misguided, drugs designed to moderate it are dangerous, and we need a better understanding of it’s role before we convict it.

After suffering memory problems and leg pains while on Stantins, I began researching cholesterol lowering drugs and found a growing community of doctors who reject the theory that cholesterol causes heart disease. I read numerous books, among them “The Cholesterol Myths,” by Dr. Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD; “The Inflammation Cure,” by William Joel Meggs, MD, Phd and “Lipitor, Thief Of Memory by Duane Graveline, Jay S. Cohen and Kilmer McCully, and “Hidden Truth About Cholesterol Lowering Drugs” by Shane Ellison. Free thinkers, these doctors don’t get on board without hard factual evidence, and in the case of cholesterol as causative, there is a great lack of evidence, and a plethora of skewed studies. You can find a dozen more good books.

While boning up, I learned that Statin drugs can increase the risk of breast cancers, cause short and long term memory problems, and a host of side effects, that my doctor never told me about. She handed me a prescription without warning me about reported side effects like gastrointestinal pain and gas, bloating, constipation, vomiting and nausea. The worst fact I learned is that drug therapy has not been proven to lower mortality, and yet doctors keep pushing them. Since I am at high risk for breast cancer, my doctor should have considered
me a non-candidate for Statins. Herein lies the problem: The medical community isn’t even aware of many risks associated with using drugs
to lower cholesterol. They have been conditioned to see these drugs as “life saving” and perpetuate this thinking without question.

In his book, “The Cholesterol Myths,” Dr. Ravnskov says: “In the package insert for Statin drugs, you can read about the risk of various less danerous side effects although none of these was reported significantly more often in the treatment group. But nothing is mentioned about the possible risk of breast cancer, the only significant side effect.” On page 215 he states: “In any case, the aim of the treament was to lower mortality and most certainly no lowering was achieved.” “It is safe to assume that it is not a harmless enterprise to lower cholesterol by drugs.” He goes on to say that there is much more to the role that cholesterol plays in the body, that it is not the cause of heart disease, and that more research is needed before we go monkey-ing with things our bodies make naturally, since our bodies have worked well for us up to this point. Remember; We fed them better before heart disease became the malady of modern man.

Why do we need to take cholesterol lowering drugs if there is no proof they protect our hearts, especially if there are such significant side effects? What if there are even more side effects than those we are currently aware of, that lie in wait? Not one study shows that drug therapy lowers the death rate significantly, while the studies do suggest an increase in the risk of breast cancer by 15%.The long term effects from altering the ratio between good and bad cholesterol are not clearly understood, either. The evidence contraindicates drug therapy for lowering cholesterol, although many doctors may not know it, as their continuing education comes from biased drug company representatives, rather than the latest Journal of American Medicine article or their colleagues. What if by making nutritional changes, (adding supplements) and incorporating exercise we can eliminate heart disease and make dangerous drugs obsolete? Heart disease became prevalent when we stopped eating the way we did for centuries, whole foods that were unadulterated with modern additives, and stopped doing hard physical work like carrying the water from the well, and chopping firewood.

So much of the modern diet is fast food, high in sodium, additives, hormones, antibiotics and contaminants, coupled with very little nutrition. We spend the day sitting at computers, inviting an early demise to our hearts through inactivity as well, since the body was designed to work and move, and must do so to stay healthy. Embrace nutrition’s role in health; Eat well, eliminate the risks associated with processed foods and man made pharmaceuticals, and supplement a healthy life with vitamins A through E. Don’t deprive yourself and suffer needlessly on low fat or no fat diets, which don’t work anyway due to the way they hammer your metabolism, and may not prove to be good for you in the longrun. Read and think for yourself in order to sift out the truth about cholesterol: Be proactive in your own health, and don’t be surprised if you meet resistance from your doctor. They bully us into taking drugs many times because they believe the drugs do good. They’re angry when we don’t follow their directions or question their authority. Some stagnate, too busy to read the latest research and they struggle against their own set of problems while diagnosing and treating disease. Be nicely assertive, and insist that they listen to your views; They are paid well enough to do so.

Question anything and everything when it comes to your health, and sift out the truth if you can discern it. If you can’t, choose the path that causes the least harm. I had to weigh out whether I wanted to die of the heart disease my doctor claimed might take me at any time, simply because I had elevated cholesterol and tryglicerides, or an agonizing death from breast cancer: Let’s see: Quick death by heart attack on this hand without drugs, or maybe years of cancer treatments, pain and suffering on that hand….hymm? I think I’ll take the quick death.
Luckily, my doctor was wrong. It turns out that it was a good thing that I didn’t just blindly follow her advice without questioning.

I know every other commercial touts some wonder drug, conditioning you to accept their claims and swallow their pills, but the bottom line is, drug companies make billions of dollars on Statins and other cholesterol lowering drugs, and this fact alone should make you stop and think. Remember Vioxx? Erythromycin? I hope you can remember a few more, while sifting out the truth for yourself.

The Holidays are here again, and maybe you would like to seat your Thanksgiving Dinner guests on some new upholstery; If you can use simple hand tools you can do this project!

Cutting Layout
Measure how much fabric you will need: You want enough to pull around the bottom of the seat and staple, about three inches on all sides. Most dining room chairs with only a padded seat will take bout 24 inches square. Most upholstery fabric comes in 45″ widths, and some in 54″. If you have eight chairs, you will need 2-3/4 yards of 54″ fabric. See the cutting layout for 54″ fabric. If you have 45″ fabric, you will need 3-2/3 yards of fabric. A little planning is needed, and extra yardage if matching patterns or stripes, since once it’s cut, you can’t change your mind. Measure and cut the number of squares you need for your new chair seats.

Stripes should go this way
Turn the chair upside down and remove the screws that fasten the seat to the frame. Take the seat to a work surface and turn it face down to remove the staples holding the cover on. If you just want to cover over the old cover, that’s allowed, but if there are already several covers, it will turn out better if you take them off. Spray the foam with Lysol to freshen it, and clean off your work surface.

Place your fabric right side down and center the seat and foam on it, upside down as well. Start at the corners and grip the point of your square, pulling it over the foam tightly and tack it down with the staple gun. Use 3/8 inch staples to hold heavier fabrics. Use a brick or weight to hold the seat in place while you tack the corners. For the seats that have a rounded rear contour, tack it in the center temporarily to keep your fabric positioned. Turn the assembly so that it faces you and smooth the corners over the points you tacked, making small pleats at the corners. Smooth the fabric around the curved sections at the back and hold it tight while you reach around and staple it. Once all the corners are smoothed, you can staple the center sections by pulling gently and smoothing over the excess fabric. Work down any wrinkles and tack them. Trim excess fabric just outside the staples if needed, replace the seat and screw it back on. Repeat for every chair, keeping your work surface as clean as possible.

Overall Tips & Warnings
•	Be sure to orient your fabric before placing the first staple, so that the fabric matches from chair to chair, and goes in the planned direction.
•	Allow plenty of time to complete the project if you’ve never upholstered a seat before, at least a day or two in advance of your gathering.
•	An electric staple gun and cordless drill with a screw bit speed things up.
•	Pull out any sharp staple remnants with the pliers, or pound them in!
